Book Review: Winds of Marque

If you know me, you know I like to take a chance here and there. Browsing the shelves at my local bookstore definitely fits into this category. Sometimes I grab a stinker that- in my opinion, should not have been published. Sometimes I get a winner. Hopefully someone out there does that with my books.

Winds of Marque turned out to be a winner. The cover of a 18th century naval officer standing on the bow of his ship while floating through space was enough to get my attention. The book itself was a fast, fun read. It reminded me of a cross between Pirates of the Caribbean and Disney’s Treasure Planet (if anyone remembers that space themed movie about Treasure Island).

The premise of the book is simple. A handpicked crew is sent on a clandestine operations to hunt down and eliminate pirates, all with a galactic war looming on the horizon. Plenty of twists and turns and the characters were engaging enough. My one complaint about this book is it glosses over important events and basically the entire final battle at the end. I get it, word count and all that, but to skip the culminating moment of the book? Suspect!

Ratings: 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Give it a read, you won’t be disappointed. Bonus points for it being written by a veteran of the Canadian Navy.
