Life’s A Dance… Ain’t It?

In 2018 I made a move I spend many long nights regretting. Perhaps not regretting, but I definitely was in over my head. I had the luxury of getting two publishers when I first started back in 2011. Now, I had no idea what I was doing and no real insight in the book industry. I wrote and that’s what I did. Whew! Talk about swing and a miss!

My first publisher went under not long after I signed with them. Total bummer. The second publisher, whom I had to sign a paper saying I wouldn’t mention them, absolutely sucked. I went 6 months without hearing from them regardless of how many times I reached out. Nothing was working and I was fed up. Then they responded, but only after I mentioned getting out of my contracts. All of sudden I was given the “this isn’t working out for us” email and they wanted to let me go. Uh huh….

Anyway, I got what I wanted but I still had no guidance, no mentor. So I threw my books out there on my own. And got slapped in the face. My failure wasn’t in the writing. It was from not taking the time to learn the business side of the world.

I struggled. I failed, for years. Sure, I’m approaching 1000 ebooks sold since 2018 and several hundred more paperbacks, but it was only through trial and error… and error…and error. The bottom line here is don’t give up. Get better, keep learning, and be willing to fail. Sooner or later the wind will turn. I’m not there yet, but I’m getting further along that path.
